First Seminar for Media held in Brussels

+ Respect, first international workshop for Media on anti-discrimination and participation of Roma held successfully in Brussels

The first technical workshop to sensitize the Media and public opinion on the issues of participation and rights of the Roma peoples was held on 5 July in Brussels, hosted by the European office of Puglia Region. The meeting, organized by Puglia and Cittalia (research centre of the National Association of Italian Municipalities) in the framework of the EU project “+ Respect “, involved representatives of the European Commission and of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union, as well as qualified representatives of the world of journalism.

During the event, some positive experiences of ethical journalism and information campaigns carried on in some Member States were highlighted, as well as policies, initiatives and tools implemented by the EU and by local authorities to promote inclusion and active participation of Roma in the democratic life of the member Countries.

The meeting, during which speakers underlined the lack of attention and superficiality of different European Media over the Roma issue, has been an occasion to reaffirm the need for a stronger commitment of the Media, the EU and local institutions to combat stereotypes through accurate information on the problems of the Roma, their life, their culture and history.
The forthcoming editions of the seminar will be held in Puglia and in Extremadura and will involve representatives of Italian and Spanish Media.
